Terms of service

The agreement between you and us. We've tried to write it in the same plain language as the rest of the site — it is still a contract, so it's worth reading.

1. Who this is between

These terms are between you (or the organization you sign up on behalf of) and The Cool Software Company, which operates Moonitor. By creating an account you agree to them. If you’re signing up for a company, you confirm you’re allowed to accept these terms for it.

2. What we provide

Moonitor checks the endpoints you configure on the schedule your plan allows, records the results, verifies failures from other locations, alerts your chosen destinations, and publishes status pages. What each plan includes is set out on the pricing page.

We aim to keep the service running continuously and we monitor it ourselves, but we don’t offer a contractual uptime guarantee or service credits. Monitoring is a safety net, not a substitute for your own operational practice — you shouldn’t rely on Moonitor as the only thing standing between you and an outage.

3. Your account

  • You’re responsible for what happens under your account, including anything your team members or API keys do.
  • Keep your password and API keys secret. Tell us promptly if you think either has been exposed, and rotate them.
  • Give us an email address you actually read — it’s how alerts and billing notices reach you.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to hold an account.

4. Acceptable use

A check is a real request to a real server, so the core rule is simple: only point Moonitor at infrastructure you own, operate, or have permission to monitor.

Running a lot of monitors is not abuse and never needs to be cleared with us first. The short list of things we would actually step in about — using checks to generate load, monitoring systems you have no relationship with, or reselling raw check capacity — is set out in full in the acceptable use policy, which forms part of these terms.

5. Billing

  • Subscriptions.Paid plans are billed in advance, monthly or annually, through Stripe. Prices are in US dollars and exclude any tax we’re required to collect.
  • Trials.Where a free trial is offered it needs no card. If you don’t subscribe by the end of it, checks stop and your data is retained for a reasonable period before deletion.
  • Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled.
  • Cancellation.Cancel any time from your billing settings. You keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for; we don’t pro-rate partial periods.
  • Failed payments. If a payment fails we’ll retry and email you. Persistent failure suspends checks before it deletes anything.
  • Price changes. We’ll give at least 30 days’ notice by email before a price change affects your renewal.
  • Lifetime deals. Codes redeemed through AppSumo are governed by the deal terms published at purchase, alongside these terms. They are tied to the account that redeemed them.

If something goes wrong with billing and it’s our fault, mail hello@moonitor.dev and we’ll sort it out.

6. Your data

Your monitor configuration, check history and status page content stay yours. We process them to run the service, as described in the privacy policy. You grant us only the licence needed to do that — to store, process and display your content back to you and to anyone you publish a status page to.

You can export everything through the public API at any time, including after cancelling and before deleting your account.

7. Changes to the service

We improve Moonitor continuously, which sometimes means changing how a feature works. We won’t remove something you depend on without notice: breaking changes to the public API ship as a new version, deprecated endpoints carry Deprecation and Sunset headers, and we allow at least 180 days between the first of those headers and switching anything off.

8. Suspension and termination

You can close your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaches the acceptable use policy, doesn’t pay, or is being used unlawfully. Except where the breach is causing active harm, we’ll contact you first and give you a chance to put it right.

9. Liability

Moonitor is provided as-is. We don’t warrant that every check will run, that every alert will arrive, or that the service will be uninterrupted — network conditions, third-party delivery providers and your own infrastructure all sit between a failure and your phone.

To the extent the law allows, we’re not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including lost revenue, lost data or business interruption arising from a missed or late alert. Our total liability in any 12-month period is capped at what you paid us in that period.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can’t lawfully be limited. If you’re a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

10. Changes to these terms

We’ll update the date at the top when these terms change, and email account holders before any material change takes effect. Continuing to use Moonitor after that means you accept the new terms.

11. Contact

Questions about these terms go to hello@moonitor.dev, or see the contact page.

Note

Plain-language terms are still terms. If your organization needs these reviewed, redlined, or replaced with your own paper, write to us — we’d rather have that conversation than have you agree to something you haven’t read.
